Today we commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. 82 years have passed since thousands of East Londoners stood together against fascism and intolerance.

On this day in 1936 the Jewish community of East London and its allies blocked the streets in order to prevent Oswald Mosley and his British Union of Fascists marching through in what became known as the Battle for Cable Street.

On 19 June 2017 there was a horrific terrorist attack outside Finsbury Park Mosque injuring at least ten people. 

On 3rd June 2017, an attack took place in the Southwark district of London, England, when a van mounted the pavement of London Bridge and was driven into pedestrians. Eight people were killed and 48 were injured, including four unarmed police officers who attempted to stop the assailants.

On 22nd May 2017 a terrorist attack took place at the Manchester Arena. Twenty-three adults and children were killed and 250 were injured, 59 taken to hospital, and 23 classified as critically injured.

Following the terrorist attack on Wednesday 22nd March on the Palace of Westminster, Rushanara Ali MP attended a vigil on the evening of Thursday 23rd March with the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, the Home Secretary, Amber Rudd MP, Communities Secretary, Sajid Javid MP and Harriet Harman MP in Trafalgar Square.

Donald Trump has caused international controversy this week over his inflammatory remarks, calling for a “total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States until our country's representatives can figure out what is going on”.
