Local leaders, volunteers and relatives marked the 74th anniversary of the Bethnal Green tube disaster on Sunday 5th March during a Memorial Service at St John Church. The memorial service marked the tragedy that befell those that sought shelter in the tube station on the 3rd March 1943, during the Second World War when 173 people died and around 300 people became trapped after a large crowd attempted to find shelter in the tube station during an air raid. The Bethnal Green tube disaster was the biggest loss of civilian life during the Second World War.

On 31 July Rushanara joined Mayor John Biggs, local Councillors and thousands of Tower Hamlets residents in Weavers Fields for the Boishakhi Mela 2016. The Mela is a celebration of Bangla New Year, and is now the largest Bengali festival outside Bangladesh, attracting over 100,000 people from all over the country.

Altab Ali Day is a commemoration of the death of Altab Ali who was murdered on 4 May 1978 by three racist teenagers as he walked home from work. The reaction among the Tower Hamlets community and across London played a key part in the defeat of the National Front in the late 1970s.

London’s Air Ambulance held a press launch at the Royal London Hospital to celebrate the addition of a second helicopter to the service. The London Air Ambulance team treated almost 2000 critically injured patients on the streets of London in 2015. The introduction of a second helicopter will mean London Air Ambulance can reach up to a further 400 patients by air each year.
