Rushanara Ali MP Supports School Breakfast Bill

Rushanara Ali MP supports Emma-Lewell Buck MP's School Breakfast Bill as a signatory.

The bill will place a requirement on the Department for Education (DfE) to provide funding for the food and delivery costs of breakfasts for the UK’s most disadvantaged schools, those where over 50% of their pupils live in deprivation.

Marking the presentation of the bill in Parliament yesterday, Rushanara Ali MP said:

‘I pay tribute to the work of Emma-Lewell Buck MP for bringing this vital bill before the house.  In June, I took part in an Opposition Day Debate to outline how vital free school meals are to families struggling to cope, especially in the context of the pandemic.

Given that 55% of children in my constituency live below the poverty line, the need for this support has never been greater. Throughout the pandemic, Tower Hamlets Council have done incredible work they to make sure meals still reached those families despite the widespread disruption to schooling.

Yesterday's bill builds on the tireless work of Marcus Rashford and anti-hunger campaigners. It is crucial the Government takes urgent action to tackle child poverty and hunger.'
