Rushanara Ali MP Statement on the Queen's speech

In response to the Queen’s speech delivered in Parliament today by Prince Charles on the Queen’s behalf, Rushanara Ali MP said:

“The cost of living crisis remained the elephant in the room that the Government refused to address in the Queen's speech. Instead of presenting a plan to support, protect, and alleviate pressures on households, the Government had no plans to address the cost of living emergency. Instead, inflation has gone through the roof and growth has stagnated under the Conservatives. Labour has a clear plan to tackle the cost of living crisis, promote jobs and ensure economic growth.

The Government provided no serious plans to tackle the two years of chaos that has been detrimental to education. Instead of improving students' experiences, opening up opportunities and supporting teachers, the speech highlighted the Conservatives’ obsession with needlessly rearranging school structures.

One welcome promise was the announcement of a Social Housing Regulation Bill. After a number of fires in Tower Hamlets, it is crucial the Government acts urgently to improve housing safety and ensure the concerns of residents are listened to.”
