Rushanara Ali MP's Statement on Myanmar crackdown

On 14 February there were reports of an escalated crackdown by the Myanmar military. This included late night raids, increased arrests, military convoys and tanks entering communities and another internet shutdown.

Rushanara Ali MP, Chair of the APPG on Democracy in Burma said:

"I strongly condemn the Myanmar military’s actions against peaceful protestors and civilians, and the ongoing detention of political leaders, senior officials, human rights activists and others.

These disturbing reports show that the military, led by General Min Aung Hlaing, will continue to act with impunity and commit human rights violations.

The military and police must stop all violence against the people of Myanmar, they must immediately release all those who have been detained unlawfully, and they must allow Members of Parliament to exercise their democratically elected mandate."
