Rushanara Ali MP's statement on the third anniversary of the Rohingya refugee crisis

Marking the anniversary of the Rohingya refugee crisis, Rushanara Ali MP said:

"It’s been 3 years since 700,000 Rohingya Muslims fled their homes following a campaign of genocide and war crimes carried out by the Myanmar military.

Today there are nearly one million refugees living in overcrowded camps in Cox’s Bazar. From my last visit to the camps two years ago, I saw first-hand the unimaginable conditions the Rohingya have to live in. With severe overcrowding and a lack of facilities, the Coronavirus pandemic could result in further loss of life.

The UK and the international community must do more to provide humanitarian support for those in the camps, and secure justice for the heinous crimes committed against the Rohingya, so they can return home to live in safety and dignity, with their rights respected including citizenship."
