Rushanara Ali MP’s Statement on the anniversary of the Covid-19 lockdown

On the anniversary of the Covid-19 lockdown in the UK, Rushanara Ali MP made the following statement:

"As we mark the first anniversary of the Covid-19 lockdown in the UK, my thoughts are with all those who have been affected, and the heroes who have helped us through the pandemic. Coronavirus has taken away loved ones and damaged livelihoods in a way that was unimaginable before this crisis, and despite the difficult circumstances, people across our community and across the country have shown great courage, strength and solidarity.

The pandemic has laid bare the deep inequalities in our society and shown the huge gaps in our health and social welfare systems after a decade of austerity. If any good can come from this crisis, it must be a renewed commitment to strengthen our public services and to eradicate the poverty and inequalities in our society which left some communities so much more exposed to this pandemic. We must come together to tackle these deep inequalities in our country.”
