Rushanara Ali MP's statement on Myanmar coup

On 1 February Myanmar's military seized power after detaining civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of her governing party.

Rushanara Ali MP, Chair of the APPG on Democracy in Burma said:

"I strongly condemn the coup led by the Myanmar military, and the unlawful arrest of Aung San Suu Kyi, other politicians, senior officials, human rights activists and others. The Myanmar military should immediately release all those who have been detained unlawfully.

The military’s actions will only lead to unrest and increased conflict, and further risks the lives of people in Myanmar.

The Myanmar military led by General Min Aung Hlaing has for many years acted with impunity for the atrocities they committed against the Rohingya and other minorities. Their actions must be met with the strongest of responses from the UK and the wider international community."
