Rushanara Ali MP statement on protests in Iran

“I am absolutely horrified at the continued use of violence by the Iranian regime against protestors. The death of Masa Amini last month in police custody shocked the world. No-one should be policed on what they wear. In the protests that have occurred since Masa’s death, the bravery of young women, girls and the men who have stood with them in the face of violence and threats from the Iranian government has been truly astonishing.

According to the Iran Human Rights group 215 people have been killed during the protests against the regime, including 27 children. I condemn this loss of human life at the hands of the Iranian security services. My thoughts are with the families and friends of all those who have lost loved ones during the protests against the regime.

I stand with the women and girls of Iran in their fight for freedom. The UK government has a responsibility to support women protestors in Iran so that their bravery is not in vain. In the words of the brave protestors for freedom and justice: women, life, freedom.”
