Rushanara Ali MP and Anthony Mangnall MP's statement on Afghanistan

On 18 August, Rushanara Ali MP and Anthony Mangnall MP as Co-chairs of the APPG on Conflict and Global Britain made the following statement on Afghanistan -

The impact of the NATO withdrawal from Afghanistan has placed millions of Afghan civilians on the edge of a potential humanitarian catastrophe. The UK must now demonstrate leadership by engaging its allies and partners to define the next phase of humanitarian support under the Taliban.

The FCDO must ensure that urgent humanitarian assistance is provided through the appropriate channels that it can continue to have a positive impact for those most in need.

The current situation in Afghanistan is a clear example of why the UK needs a new approach to mitigating the consequences of modern conflict. Consulting organisations that have experience of working in Afghanistan should be an immediate priority.

The situation is complex, but doing nothing must not be an option.
