Rushanara Ali MP will join the House of Commons Energy and Climate Change Committee. The Energy and Climate Change Committee is made up of 11 MPs from across the main political parties. It is empowered to examine the expenditure, administration and policy of the Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC).

Commenting on her election to the Committee, Rushanara said:

“I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to join this Committee and play a part in the important task of examining Government policy and approach to energy and climate change.
“There are few more important challenges facing the UK today than how we respond on climate change and champion the renewable energy agenda. Ahead of December’s world talks on sustainable development goals in Paris, it’s vital that we hold the Government to account on how they are reversing the clock on our approach to the environment.

“As a former Shadow Minister for International Development, I know that millions of people across the developing world need Britain to show leadership on climate change – the sort Labour showed in passing the 2008 Climate Change Act. I will be working hard to make sure our Government delivers best for our country and developing countries such as Bangladesh, Somalia and many other whose population face devastation if we don’t act now to protect our planet.”

Rushanara has previously served as Shadow Minister for International Development, Shadow Minister for Education and later as a member of the Treasury Select Committee. She is also a member on the Board of the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit – an organisation campaigning that supports evidence-led debate on energy and climate change issues in the UK.
