Rushanara Ali MP meets with Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry to discuss trade relations between the UK and Bangladesh

Bethnal Green and Bow MP, Rushanara Ali met with delegates from the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry. The delegates were on a visit to the UK to promote foreign investment in Sylhet and Bangladesh’s first ever Special Economic Zone.

Rushanara Ali said:

“I was pleased to meet with representatives from the Sylhet Chamber of Commerce & Industry to discuss the positive growth Bangladesh has been experiencing and the foreign investment that could help to promote further growth and development. Bangladesh has so much potential and with the right investment and improved governance, the country is very likely to meet its target of becoming a middle-income country by 2021. Every year, thousands of Bangladeshi expatriates send money home to their families in the form of remittances, the Sylhet Chamber of commerce is hoping to encourage them to think about that as a way of investing in cities like Sylhet in order to promote economic development.”

Sylhet’s Special Economic Zone consists of a 1000 acre plot of land which, since 2009, has been set up by the Bangladeshi Government; in order attract foreign investment, especially from expatriates, to incentivise industrial projects with growth in mind for the region.
