Rushanara Ali MP demands answers from PM on shocking increase in homelessness

Bethnal Green and Bow MP Rushanara Ali has exposed the Conservative-led Government’s shocking record on housing and homelessness.

During Prime Minister’s Questions on Wednesday 19th June, Rushanara demanded answers from David Cameron after it emerged that the number of homeless families living in temporary accommodation had increased by nearly 10% in the year to September 2012.

Rushanara told the House of Commons: “The number of homeless families living in temporary accommodation rose by 5,000 in the last year. Will the Prime Minister explain why?"

In response, the Prime Minister claimed: “We need to build more houses in our country, and that is exactly what the Government are doing. We are building more social houses and more private houses, and we are reforming housing benefit so that we can better use the money.”

Following PMQs, Rushanara said: “The Government’s own figures show that house building is falling while homelessness and rough sleeping are both rising. The Prime Minister’s answer shows how out of touch he is with the reality facing vulnerable families in boroughs such as Tower Hamlets. His reckless policies are making things even worse as they force cash-strapped local authorities to cope with increased homelessness.”
