The Member of Parliament for Bethnal Green and Bow has given her congratulations to Labour's Sadiq Khan who has been elected as London's new Mayor.

Rushanara Ali said:

“I am delighted that London has voted decisively to elect Labour’s Sadiq Khan as Mayor and chose a campaign of unity over division and fear. It was a great turnout and I know that Sadiq will work tirelessly to provide the things our city so desperately needs: affordable housing, safe and affordable transport, and making the streets and the air we breathe cleaner.

"I am proud that London is leading the way in electing the first Muslim mayor in a major European city. Zac Goldsmith’s disgraceful campaign has backfired and it’s a real testament to Londoners that they saw right through the Conservative Party’s islamophobic and divisive tactics.

"Sadiq successfully showed that he has the background, determination, ideas and ambition to achieve for everyone in this great city. He represents what is best about modern London, and importantly, Sadiq knows that the same opportunities that London provided to him are today are still denied to too many people. I look forward to working with Sadiq to tackle the urgent issues facing our city and changing London for the better for everyone.”
