Rushanara Ali MP's statement on the New Zealand terror attack

On 15 March 2019, there was a horrific terrorist attack in two mosques in the New Zealand city of Christchurch.

Rushanara Ali MP said:

"It is heart-breaking to hear that innocent people in New Zealand have been murdered because of their faith in a horrific terror attack. My deepest sympathies to those who have lost loved ones, or have been injured, and to the people of New Zealand.

I will be joining my constituents and colleagues from the local community today at a vigil at East London Mosque to show our support and solidarity. We must stand united against those who seek to divide our communities and we must re-double our efforts to fight all forms of extremism and terrorism.

I am deeply concerned that some news outlets and social media platforms are hosting video footage live-streamed from the attack. This is hugely distressing and should be removed from these platforms immediately.

I know many in the Muslim community and other minority communities in our country will be feeling extremely concerned about their safety. We must do everything we can to protect people and places of worship and I am pleased that the Met Police are stepping up reassurance patrols around mosques in the wake of the attack. Anything suspicious should be reported to the police or on 0800 789 321."
