On marking the anniversary, Rushanara Ali MP said:

“The Golden Jubilee of Bangladesh’s independence is of profound importance to Bangladesh and to Bangladeshis around the world.

On this special anniversary, we remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom and independence. We are forever indebted to them.

As a British Bangladeshi, I am extremely proud of the contribution of so many in the United Kingdom who helped to fight for independence, including those in the British Bangladeshi community of my parents’ generation.

As we look to the future, let us redouble our efforts to alleviate poverty, tackle injustice, address the threat of climate change and promote stronger trading relationships between Bangladesh and the United Kingdom.

Let us all work hard to ensure the people of Bangladesh can thrive and prosper over the coming years and decades.”
