Speaking in a House of Commons debate on the House of Lords Reform Bill, Rushanara Ali MP said that reforming the House of Lords would make it more diverse, democratic and fit for the twenty-first century.

Rushanara Ali said: 

"If we wish to call ourselves a modern democracy we need a second Chamber that is fit for purpose.  It is crucial to have a second Chamber that represents the people of Britain, a Chamber that looks like the people it seeks to speak for.  This is an important opportunity to ensure that the House of Lords is fit for the twenty-first century and that reform is genuinely about rebuilding trust in our political process.  It is therefore vital that we have proper time for discussion and debate."
