Government and Local Council need to act fast to tackle youth unemployment in Tower Hamlets Rushanara Ali MP tells Parliament

During Treasury Questions in the House of Commons, Rushanara Ali MP noted that whilst all other Olympic boroughs received a much-needed economic boost from the Olympic and Paralympic Games, youth unemployment increased in Tower Hamlets between June and September.

In her question to the Chief Secretary of the Treasury, Rushanara slammed the failure of the Conservative-led Government to tackle long-term youth unemployment in Tower Hamlets, and spoke of the need for the local council to take the issue of youth unemployment more seriously.

With long-term youth unemployment in Tower Hamlets increasing by 141% in the past 12 months, Rushanara urged the Government to put a tax on bankers’ bonuses to fund 100,000 jobs for young people, as proposed by Labour’s Real Jobs Guarantee.

Rushanara also called upon Tower Hamlets Council to take urgent action to get young people into jobs.
